In broad daylight, 2 teenagers jump from a window in a carpenter’s shop. Peter Fechter and Helmut Kulbeik, fleeing East German for Western freedom, land in the “death strip” between the Wall and the new fence. They run as fast as they can, but the guards spot them scaling the Wall. They aim. Fire! Helmut makes it over. His friend is shot in the hip. He falls to the ground. Hundreds watch. No one helps.
